City changes could spark development
By Mark Collette ~ The Friendswood City Council has created a special district downtown in an effort to jump-start revitalization of an area that has stymied developers for years.
Some say the new incentives for businesses, paired with personnel changes at city hall, could get downtown development back on track. Developers who have been critical of the city now seem to be cautiously optimistic.
Attorney Tony Buzbee, who owns much of the unimproved property in the downtown district, earlier this year canceled plans to spend $20 million redeveloping it, saying city staff caused delays and went hunting for reasons to kill his project.
Buzbee’s plans include more than 65,000 square feet of residential lofts, professional and retail space, tied together with landscaping, trees and a fountain.
“It will be like the nucleus of Friendswood,” he said........
